Day 1 - October 13, 2013
Our first day as parents!! We woke up from what some might call as sleep, I thought it was more torture with the number of nurses coming and going that evening and headed straight down to the NICU to check on Logan. He was fairly stable from the night before and even just over night we could see that some of the swelling in his head and bruising on his face was starting to get a bit better. The nurse filled us in that he was already at the lowest level of oxygen required and that there was a chance we might be able to move him from the throat tube to the nose ventilator later that day. His blood pressure seemed to be maintaining pretty well, however he had to have some help from the medicine to fully regulate. He was also doing fairly well maintaining his body temperature which they seemed pretty pleased about.
They did fill us in that he was anemic and would need a blood transfusion later that day. My lil man has the same blood type as me, which started the tear flood gates once again. We went back to the room and the doctor came around, after a little convincing I was able to get him to agree to let me go home (after 23 days in the hospital between my 2 visits I was ready to leave) and we started getting the room and ourselves ready. We went back in again at 12 for touch time (only every 4 hours are we allowed to actually touch him as he needs as much rest as possible so we try to keep our visits around those times, 8, 12, 4 and repeated). Once we were discharged we swung through one last time to say goodbye before making our big trip home and even though it wasn't quite 4 they allowed us to give him a little hand touch as we headed out.
That night we gave the nurse a call to get an update on Logan. They said that he had done so well on his oxygen they tried to remove him from his throat ventilator and put him on the nose ventilator but unfortunately about an hour into it they realized it wasn't working as well as we had hoped. They believe that his nose, which was smushed due to being pressed against my pelvis wall, is still too bruised on the left side to get enough air in so they had to pull it out and go back to the throat ventilator. This caused a lot of extra stress on him and some of the areas he was doing so well, like the blood pressure, were a little skewed so they worked on just trying to calm him down for the rest of the evening and allow him to get as much sleep as possible.
