A New Home - November 25-27, 2013

Image
I am enjoying my change of scenery but this home thing sounds much better! We have officially made the move and Logan is now a resident of the Intermediate Care Unit!  We were moved over on Tuesday morning and the nurse gave me a call around 9 letting me know he was there.  Initially they wanted him as close to the nurses station as possible so when I got there he was bunking up with a little girl named Racquel (I later found out her Mom works in the same building as me...small world).  It was definitely a little bit different and the first day I wasn't so sure about this new living situation however it is growing on me.  The nurses are much busier as they now have 3 babies per nurse (instead of 2) but it is much more quiet and you have a little more privacy and freedom to do what you want with your baby which is nice.  There are also a lot of the same nurses in the Intermediate area so at least a lot of the people that are so used to him and have seen him grow are still there

One Down...Seven to Go! - November 22 - 24, 2013

Hey everyone, I finished my first bottle today!! Logan has officially finished his first bottle and we couldn't be more excited and proud of our little man!!  On Friday and Saturday I tried giving him his bottle and we did ok but only could get down about 23cc's and 34cc's out of the 51cc's he needed to complete to have them add another bottle.  So after some discussions we decided it would be best to let the pros give it a try at least until he gets to about 4 bottles a day and it worked!!   Mommy's still getting the hang of this but she will figure it out! On Sunday, we were there at our regular time and he was still a bit sleepy, we decided it might be best to just go ahead and hold him and let the nurses determine the best time for him to take a bottle.  He did great during our holding, did some Kangaroo Care and the whole time he took his pacifier and seemed very interested in sucking which we were hoping meant he was starting to associate that with hi

A Bottle?!?! - November 19 - 21, 2013

So sleepy! The last couple of days have been pretty productive and exciting for us.  Our little man has made some great progress!  He has moved down to level 2 which means he is now on the low flow nasal cannula instead of the high flow and as of today he has tasted his first taste!   I think I like this new method of eating, it is so tasty!! Today was a big day and we had our first bottle feeding and I think that Logan did great.  The nurse had to do the first feeding and when we started out he had a couple of moments where he wasn't breathing as well as he should but after about 5 minutes he seemed to have it figured out.  He was able to take about 2/3 of his normal feeding (35 out of 51 cc's) and on a scale of 1 to 10 the nurse said he was an 8 for his first time.  From here on out we will be able to give him his bottles and I can't wait to see how he does with us.  They said that there is a chance they will add another bottle tomorrow to help him practice but

37 Weeks! - November 15 - 18, 2013

As of today, we are 37 weeks and Logan is officially a full term baby!  This is when the doctors say that things really start kicking in for the preemies, lets hope this includes our little man!   I love Mr. Froggy and practicing for my upcoming bottle feedings! Over the past couple of days we have continued to make some great progress!  We are now up to 5 pounds 5 ounces, he gained an ounce just in the last day!  Also, as of this morning when I was at the hospital visiting, Logan has been moved down to level 3 on the cannula (we moved to level 5 on Friday and level 4 on Saturday)!!  This means we only have one more level to go before we are able to start the bottle feedings, hopefully that will be Wednesday or Thursday.  According to the nurses, he will start with one bottle the first day and then they will add one bottle a day until he gets to 8 bottles and is able to digest all of them.  They have warned that this could take a little while as the whole eating, swallowing, breat

5 & 6!! - November 13-14, 2013

The title of this post says everything although you may not realize what it means...we have finally hit 2 very exciting milestones related to 5 & 6.  Let me break them down for you... I like 5 & 6! As of yesterday morning our little man is now weighing in at 5 pounds 1.7 ounces!!!  That means in just one month he has grown almost 2 pounds and is now the size of some regular term babies (albeit small ones).  Also, now that he is 5 pounds he can get in a carseat safely (which means we can take him home as soon as everything else is ready) and he is almost growing out of his preemie clothes!   Now on to 6...as of Wednesday afternoon they were able to finally move Logan down on his High Flow Nasal Cannula from level 7 to level 6.  I was a little worried how he would do on this but honestly he is doing better than when he was at level 7.  When I held him on Thursday he did the best he has ever done, he didn't drop his vitals too many times and for the first time ever wa

One Month Old!! - November 10-12, 2013

Hey everyone, look at what a big One Month Old I am...just chilling in my crib! Logan is officially One Month Old now!! It is amazing to look back and see how far he has come in a month and I can only imagine the progress we will see in the next month which all fingers and toes crossed will include our little man finally coming home to us!!   Things continue to stay about the same, we are still on level 7 of the nasal cannula but we are noticing some improvements in his breathing so hopefully they will start weening him off of it soon.  Now that he is 36 weeks his blood oxygen levels have increased which is making it a little harder for us to get off the high flow cannula but we are making some progress.   Logan is still weighing in at 4lbs and 14oz due to the diuretics he is taking, I am hoping though he has now kinda gone down in weight and back up so by his next weighing maybe we will be at 5 pounds??  They have moved up his feedings from 42cc to 45cc so that should help and

4 weeks old!! - November 8-9, 2013

4 weeks is so tiring!! Our little man is officially 4 weeks old now!  It is amazing how far he has come and how much he looks like a little baby now.  The past 4 weeks have definitely been hard ones but it is reassuring to see how far he has come and I know we still have a little ways to go but we have made great progress so far... Things continue to be pretty stable with Logan over the past couple of days, we are still on the nasal cannula and at level 7, so no big movement there.  We think that some of this has to do with the fact that he had to be intibated for so long, but the doctor is trying him on some diuretics to see if that may help as well.  He said there is a chance that there is some fluid in his lungs causing it to be a little harder for him to get stable on his breathing so fingers crossed that will work, it seemed to be a little better yesterday.  As of Thursday night he is weighing in at 4lbs 14.5oz so we are almost to 5 pounds.  The doctor seemed very happy wit

We don't have too much new to report over the past couple of days but things are stable so that is a good thing.  Logan is still on the nasal cannula and at level 7, his oxygen levels have been a bit inconsistent so they haven't been able to drop him down yet.  We are hoping they will try something tomorrow as it has now been a week at the same level and we need to get down to 2 before we can try the bottle and eventually get him home.  Fingers crossed we will make some movement.  The opthamologist came back on Tuesday and gave us good news that he was very happy with the way that Logan's eye was progressing.  I believe that we can even tell the difference since he is keeping both eyes open more often and they are more evenly open as well.  He is also packing on the ounces, he is now up to 4lbs 12.5oz and will be weighed again tonight so hopefully we should be hitting 5 pounds soon!! On a positive side, we have been able to do a lot more with Logan while we are ther

Logan has finally broken free and is now in his big boy crib and out in the world with everyone else!!  :)   Such a good finger holder... When we were there on Sunday they were still working on weening him out of the isolette, they thought he was going to be out on his own by noon on Sunday but due to some new admittance  and some other things going on they were a little behind in there timing, nothing that seemed to be Logan related though which was good and he still seemed to be regulating his temperature well.   They weighed him on Sunday night and he had gained 4 ounces and is now up to 4lb 9oz.  This also meant that they would take his food up to 43cc's from the 39 he was at previously.  Even at this higher amount of food it seems like he is tolerating it well with little to no residuals after every eating.   Check out my outfit Grandma got me! My visit with him on Monday may have been one of my favorites so far.  He was very alert and I got to change him int

Guess who is 3 weeks old today??  I can't believe it, it feels like it has been a year, not 3 weeks but so glad we have made it this far with so much great progress.   Yesterday unfortunately did not allow me to go home.  I had to spend another night in the hospital due to a fever that I got over night, however I think it was more from the blood transfusion than from the infection, but the doctors would rather be safe than sorry so they wanted another 24 hours of antibiotics.  I was not very happy with this decision and yet another Friday night at Hotel Piedmont but I understood and if it could possibly keep me from having to come back I was all for it.   Being at the hospital on Friday did allow me to get to see my little man more and it was great to have a visitor.  Andrea was in town so she spent the afternoon with me keeping me company and she got to meet Logan!  He was making more great progress on Friday, they said they were getting closer to weening him off of the CP
