Day 3!!

Mommy's love!
After all the anticipation and worry about Day 3 we were pleasantly surprised when it ended up being our best day yet!  Logan slept great on Saturday night, no spasms and I think we all woke up rested and happy which was huge.  They came in around 6:30 and took out the epidural, he did it so quickly that Chris actually thinks he accidentally just pulled it out...however I think that was just how they do it, who knows??  We were also able to get off the vital machines, so that was one less thing we had connected to Logan...only thing left was the IV which they were keeping on to administer the antibiotics and some of his pain medicine.

At about 8:30 the PT's came in to teach us how to help Logie get out of bed and how we need to transfer him and carry him while he heals.  The main thing was that we really need to keep his back and hips in alignment and not allow for him to twist too much or to let his legs hang and pull on the back.  Logan did amazing!!!  The therapists said that usually the children are crying through the whole process and they barely are able to let one parent try the transfer, in our case both Daddy and I (and the therapist) were able to transfer him back and forth from his stroller to bed with no whimpering or crying or anything.  The therapist actually told us she has NEVER seen a child do so well in their first therapy!  We will take it!!

Learning how to get in and out of bed...

Since he was already in his stroller we decided to go out and get some fresh air, so we took Logie outside for the first time since Thursday morning.  It was so great to just be out and about and he was happy to see all the flowers.  We of course had to take a ton of pictures to document this and we found a couple of wishing ponds and Logie practiced his arm and made some wishes, again and again and again!

I think they are both smitten!  <3

After the garden we headed back to the room for some rest as getting out of bed for the first time had made him a bit sleepy, I think it made GM sleepy too!  ;)

ZZZZZZZZZ,,,,,

After having some lunch it was time for our second therapy of the day, this one was actually in the gym (which is amazing) and would be for an hour.  He did SO great, we started with them teaching the stretches we will need to be doing on a very consistent basis when we get home, then we did some sitting on a bench working on getting those core muscles activated again and we were even able to put on his AFO's and do some standing.  Thank goodness for the Grandma's they put on quite a show for Logie to keep him distracted, everything from Fireman hats, to jumping jacks to a kick line, but it worked and he laughed through the whole thing!

Learning about our stretches while Elmo distracts...

What better distraction than 2 amazing Grandma's doing
jumping jacks while you count to 20?

Jump Gammy and GM, Jump!!
(oh and practicing our sitting and working on that core)

Now, I am sure not many of you know what it feels like to put AFO's on a spastic child, but it isn't easy, honestly, I am one of the only ones that could really get them on because his ankles would be so tight that to get his foot flat was very difficult...this is where I saw the first big difference and could totally see what the surgery had done...it was like butter putting his AFOs on...his heel just slid right back and his foot fit in there like a glove.  It was amazing, I don't really know any other words for it and was so great to really be able to see and feel the difference of what this surgery has done for him.  Some of the other things we noticed is laying on his belly, he can now get his foot all the way to his booty, when we practice half kneel to stand up, it isn't like pulling apart the wishbone on your Thanksgiving turkey anymore, it is actually doable!  It was just so rewarding and exciting to see all the new possibilities we have!!

Ok, now back to therapy!  After his AFOs were on we did some sit to stands, his legs are definitely a lot weaker, they aren't getting totally straight and he doesn't quite trust them.  This is both probably his unfamiliarity of these new legs and also really seeing where the spasticity was taking over for the muscles.  Since he was doing so well, they thought we would give the bike a try and had a nice spin around the gym chasing Gammy all along the way.

Ring the bell!!
Watch out here I come!

We had a pretty quiet afternoon, no major issues with spasms and after dinner decided to go up to the garden to watch the fireworks.  There is a fair going on this weekend in the park across from the hotel and you could see all the fireworks from the rooftop garden.  When we got up there there were already a lot of people and weren't a lot of spots for Logie to see (luckily he wasn't too interested) so we ended up just sitting on the swing and enjoying the beautiful evening which worked well for everyone.

So happy to just sit on Mommy's lap, Mommy was happy too!
Enjoying our evening!
Since Logie did so well the night before I decided to go back to the hotel with Gammy since Grandma had to leave us earlier in the day (boo hoo hoo)  It turned out that the night didn't go quite as smoothly unfortunately and they were up for a while with some spasms, finally around 4 they got some Valium for him and he slept for about 4 hours which was at least something!  Luckily though he seemed in great spirits this morning.

We had a great first therapy this morning but I will fill you in on that in my next post about day 4 but lots of exciting and good news to show you (and probably more photos and videos than you may want to see)!  The prayers are working so keep them coming...thank you prayer warriors!  XOXO
