Katie Beckett!!
Ok, so I know I promised updates more regularly and I am already slacking but hopefully you will all forgive me! :)
We had some good news recently and I wanted to share it with you all...as I may have mentioned, the doctors believe that ideally Logan should be having professional therapy almost daily with a mixture of physical, occupational and speech. My insurance however only allows us to have 20 a year and even then we are still responsible for the $50 copay. This was making it difficult to really get all of the therapy in place that can help Logan make the most progress.
There is a program called Katie Beckett that actually allows you to apply for Medicaid for a child with disabilities even if the parents do not qualify for it based on income. I had to fill out / put together about 350 pages of documentation about Logan's condition, get it signed from multiple doctors and deliver everything in a perfect packet to the Katie Beckett offices. This was quite an undertaking and after doing tons of research online to how to best fill out all the forms, what we needed to say, how it needed to be presented I was able to get a final packet ready.
I had read that on average you get denied about 50% of the time on your first application however you could resubmit with the necessary changes. Also, once you apply it can take up to 90 days to get an answer as to whether or not they will accept you. Well, I got the application in on Feb 12 and this past weekend we got our letter back saying that they had ACCEPTED Logan!! WOOHOO!!!
Now, if you are anything like me, you are not very familiar with Medicaid and what it means to have it. I never thought it would be something we would need and didn't really understand what it was. So let me try and help explain to you why this is such a blessing for us! Medicaid acts as a secondary insurance behind our primary BCBS. All dr visits, therapies, equipment has to be submitted to BCBS first, if there is a copay or something that BCBS is not willing to pay for (like his therapies after we hit the 20) Medicaid will cover it!! That means we can move forward with our 4-5 therapies a week, that we don't have to worry if BCBS will cover his walker and we can just move forward giving and getting the best care possible for Logan!! This was a huge win for us and one that I think Mommy and Daddy really could use!
So...here is to hoping that we can start hitting the ground running and get some great progress in place! First up is Aquatherapy which he will start next week, he already loves the pool and the water helps him not feel quite as tight and able to move more freely! I think it will be great for him and can't wait to see how he responds! (perhaps that will be the next update) Until then...lovies to all our prayer warriors, you are doing great work!! :)
I know you put so much work into preparing the package including the sweet picture of Logan on the front. You think of all the details. I'm thrilled and thankful Logan was approved.
